6 Tips For Choosing The Right Cat Name

Names, when you think about them, are very important things. Names define personality, feelings, desires, and they help create our bonds with other people and animals.

When it comes to our pets, a name is a representation of the affection, trust, and bond between ourselves and our furry companions.

Believe it or not, but humans tend to unconsciously give a different value to an animal that has name. A name changes that "thing" into a fellow creature, friend, or companion.

Once you have picked out a cat or kitten to share your life and home with, he or she now becomes a friend, confidant, and family member.

The cat's name should express all of that affection, bonding, and dependability, but it needs to express much more as well. A name should always be suited to the cat in question and take into account the cat's looks or appearance, personality, and characteristics as well as your interests, tastes, and preferences.

Tips To Keep in Mind When Naming A Cat

  1. Cats learn one to two syllable names especially quickly.
  2. Cats pay more attention to how you say the name than the name itself. The inflection you use is what matters most. Long, drawn-out vowels get your cat's attention very well.
  3. Any name you choose should be used by the entire family or anyone who spends regular time with the cat or kitten.
  4. Always avoid names that are embarrassing or insulting, if said out loud in public. If you have to call your cat from your front yard, or in an apartment complex, make sure it is something everyone can hear without a problem.
  5. If you want to choose a name that is "in", remember that celebrities, fads, songs, and other current events may be "in" today, but "out" tomorrow. Your cat can live up to 15 years or more so make it something that will last that long.
  6. Decide on one name or one nickname. Too many different names, including nicknames will confuse your cat.
  7. Pick our several names and try them out on your cat, see if he or she responds naturally to any of them.
